Violence is an important, if unpleasant, aspect of the world that has endured for centuries and continues today. Therefore, it is a relevant and worthwhile topic to focus on in children’s literature, since children should be aware of the realities of the world, both good and bad.   With comic books, the violence is explicitly shown in the images as well as being written about. Comic book readers are getting an extra dose of the violence in this way. A much stronger case for the effects of violent media comes in a opinion column on the New York Times website entitled “ Does Violent Media Lead to the Real Thing?”.

Like others critical of a singular focus on media, Sternheimer posited that overemphasis on the perceived dangers of media violence serves as a red herring that directs attention away from the actual causes of violence rooted in factors such as poverty, family violence, abuse, and economic inequalities (Sternheimer, , ).   Fundamentally, the focus on violence feeds into the false narrative pushed by the far-right that there is some equivalence by extremists on the right and left. The old trope of “If it bleeds, it leads” applies not just to the choice of events the media covers but how they cover an event.

Karla Downing’s excellent book, 10 Lifesaving Principles for Women in Difficult Marriages (Beacon Hill Press), offers solid biblical principles you can put into practice, including how to speak the truth in love, set boundaries and change yourself, rather than him.
